Project : Evaluation of the physical properties of four locally available brands of paracetamol tablets
Abstract : In this research project, the physical properties of four locally available brands of paracetamol tablets namely GPO (flat), T.P. (flat), Sara (flat), Sara (oval), Tylenol (oval) were evaluated for quality comparison : The experimental investigation included : (1) dissolution test, (2) disintegration test (3) friability test, (4) water uptake and(5) hardness test. The paracetamol tablets were conditioned to low and high moisture contents by exposing at 26.3oC, 65%RH and 30 oC, 90%RH, respectively. The results showed rapid dissolution and acceptable values of drug release ranging from 90 to 110%. The disintegration time of tablets was in 0.4 2.56 min range and Tylenol was fastest to disintegrate. The friability of GPO was highest and equal to 0.3% whereas Sara (Oval) was least friable. The result of water uptake showed that moisture content affected the physical properties of all brands of paracetamol tablets. At high moisture content the dissolution or drug release increased. The distribution of hardness or crushing strength was also influenced by the increase in moisture content. The hardness distributions showed the presence of skewness. In general, log-normal and Weibull distributions represented the crushing strength distributions of tablets better than the normal distribution. The shape and scale parameters of the fitted weibull distribution were found to be linearly related to coefficient of variation and mean values of the measured crushing strength data. |
